Do you know about the “Conversion Therapy Ban Act?”
Recently, Australia has passed the 'Conversion Practices Ban Act' in several states, which criminalizes attempts to change or suppress a person's sexual orientation or gender identity. These bills began in Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) in 2020, gradually expanding to Victoria in 2022, New South Wales in 2024, and South Australia in 2025. Currently, this legislation is in effect in five of Australia's eight major administrative areas: Queensland, the Australian Capital Territory, Victoria, South Australia, and New South Wales. This suggests that a majority of Australian society supports this legislation, and similar bills are likely to be introduced in Western Australia, the Northern Territory, and Tasmania, where the law is not yet present. This trend presents a deep dilemma for Christians in this land.
The problem with this legislation is not merely that it prohibits prayer and counseling. Furthermore, some policies include government support for gender reassignment surgery, which in effect encourages 'conversion' in one direction, while simultaneously regarding attempts to return to one's original sex as 'suppression' and thus criminalizing help for de-transitioning. This policy and legal trend distorts the meaning of 'conversion' and severely infringes upon an individual's religious freedom and conscience.
In the United States, this law has been passed in over 22 states and applies to minors under the age of 18. - California, New Jersey, Oregon, Illinois, Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Colorado, Washington State, Hawaii, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Utah, Virginia, Minnesota, and Washington D.C.
There are also states currently attempting to legislate the Conversion Therapy Ban Act. - Arizona, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.
From a Biblical perspective, this presents a serious problem. The Bible defines all human sin as a state of 'falling short of the glory of God' (Romans 3:23). The Bible teaches that every way of life that does not follow Biblical truth is sin. However, this legislation regards the act of even exhorting a person with a specific sexual orientation or gender identity to live according to the Bible's teachings as 'suppression,' thus treating it as evil. This legislation denies God, who created humanity, and the Biblical truth He has given. Humans are created in the image of God, and the Bible declares that our identity and the meaning of our existence come solely from the Creator God. The standards and laws of this world can never replace the truth. Christian counseling and pastoral care are not acts that suppress an individual's identity, but rather help them find true freedom and wholeness in the Word of God.
In conclusion, the confusion and conflict this legislation will bring to society ultimately stem from humanity's attempt to set its own standards and oppose God. However, the Gospel offers the answer to all these problems. The Gospel acknowledges that all people are sinners and shows the only path where sin can be forgiven and salvation attained through the cross of Jesus Christ.
Persecution against Christianity due to this legislation should already be viewed as having begun. The inability to counsel those who come seeking guidance for their identity confusion, and the inability to pray for those who come seeking prayer, is a challenge to God and can only be seen by us as persecution. The suppression of Christianity has already begun.
We must fight against this legislation and simultaneously proclaim the Gospel. The Gospel we must proclaim is not the laws and systems of this world, but the Gospel of Jesus Christ, who broke the power of sin and death. Biblical truth is absolutely unchanging and is the eternal word of life that presents the path of true repentance and salvation to all people. Only the Gospel can correct the confusion of this age and completely restore souls broken by sin.
