Lies
The Bible doesn't simply define "lying" as a moral issue. Instead, it connects it to the profound themes of God's nature and human salvation. Lying is a grave sin that goes against the created order and destroys human relationships; its dangers are emphasized throughout the entire Bible.
The Bible identifies Satan as the origin of lies, the "father of lies" (John 8:44). Satan used lies to tempt Eve in the Garden of Eden, causing humanity to fall into sin. Since then, he has continually deceived people with falsehoods. Lying is an act of rejecting God's truth and siding with Satan's deception; it's an act that degrades the dignity of humanity, created in God's image.
The Bible warns against various forms of lying. These include speaking falsehoods as if they were true (Exodus 20:16), deceiving others to gain profit or cause harm (Proverbs 12:17), distorting the truth to please others or gain personal advantage (Proverbs 29:5), and intentionally concealing or withholding the truth (Leviticus 5:1). These types of lies numb an individual's conscience, destroy human relationships, and disrupt social order. False testimony, in particular, leads to severe consequences, harming innocent people and undermining justice.
Jesus Christ, who is "the way and the truth and the life" (John 14:6), proclaimed truth in a world dominated by lies. Jesus strongly criticized false teachings and hypocritical actions, emphasizing a life of truthfulness. The Bible warns that those who lie cannot escape God's judgment (Revelation 21:8).
The way to overcome lies is to believe in Jesus Christ and abide in His truth. We should strive to abandon deceitful thoughts and cultivate a truthful heart with the help of the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, through repentance, we must confess past lies, seek forgiveness, and earnestly strive to live a truthful life.
Modern society is an era rampant with various forms of lies. False information spreads rapidly through the internet and social media, and lies and deception are prevalent in politics, economics, and society. The media plays a significant role in this. If the media spreads falsehoods, a nation can fall into chaos. In such a time, it is even more crucial to discern truth based on a biblical worldview and to distance ourselves from lies.
The Bible defines lying as a grave sin that defies God's created order and destroys human relationships. As Christians, we must strive to overcome falsehoods and live truthful lives in the truth of Jesus Christ.
